The American Fertility Institute clinic offering "babies on demand" reversed the issue. Suspend at least for now the controversial offer after the uproar that has caused its disclosure in world society.

Those responsible for the clinic acknowledge the apparent negative social impact caused by the news, and say they will remain attentive to public opinion.

Jeff Steinberg, its founder and pioneer of IVF in the 1970s, said he was not worried about the controversy or scared by the criticism, but believes that the best thing right now is to continue offering pre-implantation genetic diagnosis only for parents with albinism or other genetic skin pigmentation disorders, and to prevent life-threatening diseases in babies.

The procedure of this technique is similar to others that are already used in assisted reproduction.

One cell from each embryo is tested for certain genetic diseases, and only healthy embryos are implanted in the mother's uterus.

On the other hand, some experts in the sector denounced that the order of "babies a la carte", proposed by this clinic was a mere advertising strategy, and that no one is yet capable of guaranteeing the selection of embryos with specific physical features such as color of eyes, skin or hair.
